Embracing a Holistic and Modern Approach to Healing: Beyond the "Either/Or" Myth

Tracy Anderson

Recently, I received a question that stirred something inside me—a truth bomb that’s long overdue for detonation. There’s a myth floating around the healing world, one that frustrates me to no end. It’s a myth so dangerous; it’s keeping people from the tools they desperately need to thrive. Let’s break it down.

The question came from someone who had worked with other healers in the past—practitioners who dug their heels in and flat-out refused to help unless this person followed a set of prescribed steps. "I’ve been told by other healers that I ‘won’t be helped’ until I do ‘xyz’ or that I shouldn’t be seeing a doctor or taking medication because it will ‘mask the real issue.’ What are your thoughts on this? Do you work with clients who also use medical interventions? And is there anything you ‘can’t or won’t’ help clients with?"

Let’s get real here.

Let's Set the Stage:

First off, let's answer the last part of that question: "Is there anything I can't or won’t help clients with?" Truth bomb time—yes, there are things I can’t help with, and I’m totally upfront about that. Here’s the deal: I’m not a licensed therapist, trauma specialist, or mental health professional. If you need therapy or help with mental health issues beyond energy work, I’ll happily point you in the right direction.

But here’s the spicy truth—if you’re told by a practitioner that you MUST first "do xyz" before they’ll help you, or worse, that you need to give up your meds, that’s a massive red flag. If they’re not willing to work with your whole self, including your medical needs, they’re not the right fit for you. Period. Think of it like a referral—if your GP can’t perform surgery, they’re not going to leave you hanging; they’ll send you to a surgeon. Holistic practitioners should be doing the same. We’re not in the business of causing more harm.

"Holistic or Modern?"

Now, let’s get into the heart of the myth: the idea that holistic healing and modern medicine are at odds. That you have to pick a side. B.S. You do not have to choose one or the other. This “either/or” thinking is not only outdated—it’s downright dangerous.

I’ve had so many clients come to me feeling guilty, confused, or even ashamed because other practitioners told them to ditch their medication or stay away from doctors. Guess what? That not only harms your healing journey—it’s flat-out irresponsible.

It’s time to call out this myth for what it is: harmful.

Let me make this crystal clear: I will NEVER tell you that you don’t need your medication or medical interventions. Ever. I don’t care what any "holistic guru" says. In fact, my website says it loud and clear: “The tools, techniques, and services offered by Your Intuitive Joy are intended to complement—not replace—professional medical advice or treatment.”

A Testament to Integration

This isn’t just professional talk—it’s personal. I’ve been there. I’ve walked the dark path of depression, anxiety, and PTSD. And you know what? There was a time when medication was the only thing that kept me from spiraling further into the abyss. It wasn’t "the easy way out"—it was survival. Medication gave me the space to heal. It gave me the room to work on myself—both holistically and through therapy. It allowed me to reclaim my life.

So, let’s get this straight: holistic healing and modern medicine can work in harmony. They don’t need to be enemies. In fact, when used together, they’re unstoppable.

Embracing ALL the Tools

I firmly believe that healing should include every tool available to you—medication included. And as much as I advocate for holistic practices, I also respect the necessity of medical treatment when it's needed. In my own journey, I found that with enough deep inner work and life changes, I eventually didn’t need long-term medication anymore. But I still respect it. I still value therapy. Therapy isn’t just reactive; it’s proactive. It’s a way to prevent crises and keep myself in check.

But the bottom line is this: healing is personal. No one else gets to dictate your path. Your journey will look different from anyone else’s, and that’s okay. Trust your intuition to guide you, and leave behind what doesn’t serve you.

Respecting All Paths

On the flip side, I’ve also seen doctors dismiss holistic practices outright. I once worked at a nutrition company where I had customers telling me their doctor said multivitamins were a waste of money. My response? "Ask your doctor, ‘Even if I’m healthy, would taking this harm me?’" In most cases, they said no.

The point is—your healing journey is yours to own. Just because someone has a title doesn’t mean they know better than your own body. Don’t let anyone tell you that your path is wrong.
